UNITED NATIONS IPCC - The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the United Nations body for assessing the science related to climate change. Having declared a Code Red, we wonder how that equated to the Defense Readiness Condition, better known as the "Defcon" warning system, in terms of war footing.

DefCon 4 involves an increased state in military intelligence in preparations for DefCon3 air force mobilization such as to be closer to deploying nuclear missiles in less than six hours, with all out thermo-nuclear war imminent, Code Red (or white) leading to World War Three.

CODE GREEN - The scales of war are equally applicable to the heating of the planet in terms of changing our climate. DefCon four is an increased state of military intelligence above normal readiness in preparation for Code Yellow and DefCon3. DefCon 5 is the lowest state of readiness, normal conditions.

It might help us to look upon the war against global warming in military terms. As a war to be won strategically as a series of battles.

To win the war, we need to define the strategic objectives as a series of skirmishes. Some of the key battles United Nations Members have lost already, is making all the right noises as to agreements to curb greenhouse gases, but actually doing very little about it. This has led to a constant rise in temperatures on planet earth, that at the present rate is almost sure to lead to civil and political unrest as food insecurity escalates from accelerated desertification and reduced agricultural land to grow crops and raise livestock. The starving masses are likely to rebel - and politicians tempers fray, making their trigger fingers itchy. At this point all thoughts of the devastation and suffering at Hiroshima and Nagasaki will be blanked out.

After NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) was created, the command used different readiness levels (Normal, Increased, Maximum) subdivided into eight conditions, e.g., the "Maximum Readiness" level had two conditions "Air Defense Readiness" and "Air Defense Emergency". In October 1959, the JCS Chairman informed NORAD "that Canada and the U. S. had signed an agreement on increasing the operational readiness of NORAD forces during periods of international tension." After the agreement became effective on 2 October 1959, the JCS defined a system with DEFCONs in November 1959 for the military commands. The initial DEFCON system had "Alpha" and "Bravo" conditions (under DEFCON3) and Charlie/Delta under DEFCON4, plus an "Emergency" level higher than DEFCON1 with two conditions: "Defense Emergency" and the highest, "Air Defense Emergency" ("Hot Box" and "Big Noise" for exercises).

HOW MUCH IS THE EARTH HEATING UP - As of early 2017, the Earth had warmed by roughly 2 degrees Fahrenheit (more than 1 degree Celsius) since 1880, when records began at a global scale. The number may sound low, but as an average over the surface of an entire planet, it is actually high, which explains why much of the world’s land ice is starting to melt and the oceans are rising at an accelerating pace. If greenhouse gas emissions continue unchecked, scientists say, the global warming could ultimately exceed 8 degrees Fahrenheit, which would undermine the planet’s capacity to support a large human population.
